RIFLES IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

First use of rifles in the Ottoman Empire goes back to at least to early fifteen century. It is recorded that they were used in 1421 Duzmece Mustafa upraising. Manufacturing of rifles and gunpowder were done under state control at many shops across the Empire. The historical collection for these rifles are mainly at Military Museum in Istanbul but with limited pieces exhibited at the Topkapi Place Museum. The oldest examples go back to the fifteenth century. Some examples from the collection from the Military Museum are provided below.
