Derya Türkan was born in Istanbul in 1973. He graduated from İhsan Özgen’s violin class at Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory in 1995. In 1990, he was invited as a guest musician to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Istanbul State Turkish Music Ensemble, which was directed by Necdet Yaşar. He performed with the Ensemble for 7 years. In 1991, he entered TRT Istanbul Radio, and became a full employee in 2000. On the Radio, he performed with many great Turkish artists such as Alaadin Yavaşça, Bedri Sıdkı Sezgin, Niyazi Sayın and Erol Deran. Since 1992, Türkan has performed with Kudsi Ergüner group and with Anatolian Group, directed by İhsan Özgen, and given many concerts in Turkey and abroad including in the US, France, Germany, Finland, Italy, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Greece and Israel. In 1996, with Kudsi Ergüner Türkan participated in a concert, which was held by the French President Jacque Chirac at Sorbonne University in Paris on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of Yehudi Menuhin.
Türkan has played in Kudsi Erguner’s albums such as “Islam Blues”, “Ottomania”, “Osmanlı Davulları”, “La banda Allaturca” and “Tac Mahal”. He has also given many concerts both as a soloist and a member of various groups, and has given seminars and lessons at Harvard University, UC Santa Cruz and MIT. In 1997, he released “Ahenk” with Murat Aydemir; and “İstanbul’dan Mektup” with Greek artist Sokratis Sinopulos. He founded İncesaz group with Cengiz Onursal and Murat Aydemir, and has been one of the members since then. In 2001, Türkan released “Fuad” with Armenian whistle artist Civan Gasparyan and Erkan Oğur.
