Gülsün Karamustafa was born in Ankara in 1946. She graduated from the Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy. She currently lives and works in Istanbul. She opened her first professional exhibition in 1978 at the Istanbul Taksim Art Gallery. In the 80′s, she took part in several continuous exhibitions in Istanbul including “Günümüz Sanatçıları/Contemporary Artists", “Yeni Eğilimler/New Trends” and “Öncü Türk Sanatından Bir Kesit/A Cross Section of Avantgarde Turkish Art". She held solo exhibitions in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Bodrum. She worked as artistic director in the cinema industry from 1984 to 1990 and co-directed the film “Benim Sinemalarım/My Cinemas” with Füruzan. She participated in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th International Istanbul Biennials, the 3rd Kwangju, 8th Havana, 3rd Cetinje and 1st Seville Biennial. She opened solo exhibitions in Paris, Geneva, Montréal, Munich, Helsingborg, Milan, Torino, Rotterdam and Kassel among others. She took part in exhibitions across Germany in Berlin, Bonn, Wiesbaden, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Köln, Hanover and Munich, and cities across the world including Copenhagen, Eindhoven, Amiens, Graz, Geneva, Genoa, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Zurich, Vienna, New York, Minneapolis and Taipei. Articles have been published on her work in n.paradoxa, Art in America, Arredamento Mimarlık, Art Forum, Frieze, Springerin, Kunstmagazin and Kunstforum. She has published two books, which bring together her work from 1990 to 2000 titled Create Your Own Story with the Given Material and Trellis of my Mind. The monograph titled Gülsün Karamustafa: Güllerim Tahayyüllerim / My Roses My Reveries, (published in June 2007 by Yapı Kredi Publications) was written by art historian and curator Barbara Heinrich. Karamustafa was part of the teaching staff of the School of Applied Arts in Istanbul from 1975 to 1981; she then worked at the IFU (Internationale Frauen-Universität) and taught as guest professor at the Munich Fine Arts Academy. She continues to perform workshops at various art schools across the world including the Royal Academy Kopenhag, Fuenen Academy Odense, Cenevre HEAA (Haute École des Arts Appliqués) and Aquila Academia delle Belli Arti. Her works are included in the collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, MUMOK, Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Sammlung Essl, Klosterneuburg and the Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven among others.
