Hale Tenger was born in Izmir in 1960. After studying computer programming at Bosphorus University in Istanbul, she continued her study at Istanbul Academy of Fine Art and completed her Master’s degree in the Ceramics Department. She later studied at the South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education in Wales for her postgraduate studies. Tenger had solo exhibitions in galleries in Turkey as well as Kunst Werke in Berlin (1993-1994), Galerie Le Monde de l’Art in Paris (1995) and Mannheimer Kuntsverein in Mannheim (2001). She also has participated in many group exhibitions: the Painting and Sculpture Museum of the Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul (1990); Modern and Beyond: 1950-2000 exhibition at Santral Istanbul (2007-2008); the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (1996); Centre d’art Contemporain, Geneva (1999); Historisches Museum, Hannover (2000); and Kunstmuseum, Bonn (2002) as well as various biennials including those in Havana, San Paulo, Johannesburg and Istanbul. Experimenting with different mediums and styles, Tenger questions the issues of femininity and rule making in society, political suppression, immigration and cultural identity. The artist was invited to a range of organizations to hold lectures and panels regarding these themes in her work including at Goldsmiths College, University of London; Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Platform Garanti Art Center in Istanbul among many others. Using large panels with an army of popular ready-mades or film from documentaries, she makes a deep impression on the viewers. Tenger currently lives and works in Istanbul. In 2012, she exhibited her work in the exhibition “Journeys: Wanderings Through Contemporary Turkey” at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.
