Yeşim Ustaoğlu was born in Trabzon in 1960. She graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Karadeniz Technical University. She then completed her master’s degree at Yıldız Technical University. Her articles on films were published in several magazines. After making several award –winning shorts in Turkey, Ustaoğlu made her feature film debut with 1994’s "İz" (The Trace). The film was presented at numerous international festivals, including Moscow and Gotenburg. Her short films such as "Bir Anı Yakalamak", "Magnafantagna", "Oberhausen", "Düet ve Otel" were awarded in many competitions. Ustaoğlu received international recognition for her 1999 film, "Güneşe Yolculuk" (Journey to the Sun). She was awarded for this film in many national and international film festivals including Cannes, San Sebastian, Venice, Berlin, and Toronto.
