Gencay Gürün was born in Üsküdar, Istanbul in 1932. She finished at Sainte-Pulcherie French High School and Notre Dame de Sion High School. She then graduated from the Faculty of Law at Ankara University. She continued her master’s degree in International Relations and diplomacy at the London School of Economics. She served as a diplomat in the Turkish Foreign Ministry. She married ambassador Kamuran Gürün when she served as a consul in Paris and left her profession. After she returned to Ankara, Gürün served as a general secretary and chief dramaturge in the State Theatre in 1979. Between 1984 and 1994, she served as a General Art Director in the Istanbul City Theatre. In 1995, Gürün founded her own theatre, Tiyatro İstanbul. In addition, she translated many theater works into Turkish. In 1996, she was selected as a 20th term member of parliament in Izmir and served in the Turkish Grand National Assembly. She is also a high commission member of the Press Council. Gürün received a medal of "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" from the French Government. Gürün has an honorary doctorate, which was given by Boğaziçi University. She was awarded the “Muhsin Ertuğrul Special Prize” in the 14th Afife Theater Awards in 2010.
