Hasan Çelebi was born in Erzurum in 1937. He began learning calligraphy in 1964 and took lessons from Halim Özyazıcı, Hamit Aytaç and Kemal Batanay. Çelebi received his professional practicing certificate in the scripts of Sülüs and Nesih from Hamit Aytaç in 1971 and in the scripts of Ta’lik and Riq’a from Kemal Batanay in 1980. Çelebi was assigned to produce Islamic calligraphy panels for the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Jeddah in 1981. In addition to it, he went to Medina to restore the calligraphy panels in Al-Masjid al-Nabawi in 1983.
Çelebi held his first solo exhibition in IRCICA (Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture) in 1982. In 1984, he went to Kuala Lumpur for his second solo exhibition and was invited by Hasan b. Tallal, Prince of Jordan, to hold his third solo exhibition in Amman in 1985. In 1987, Çelebi spent his time in Saudi Arabia, where he produced calligraphy panels for the Quba Mosque. In 1992, he was invited by the Islamic and Cultural Centre in Malaysia to give lectures and have an exhibition in Kuala Lumpur: his exhibition entitled “My 30th Year in the Art of Islamic Calligraphy” was held in 1994. He has also participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.
Çelebi has restored many important calligraphic panels such as the calligraphy pieces on the inner dome of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the calligraphy on the inner dome of Hırka-ı Sherif Mosque, some of the calligraphy pieces on the newly constructed parts of Masjid al-Jum’ah, Masjid al-Qiblatain, and Masjid al-Nabawi, the calligraphy pieces inside and outside of the Islamic Medical Centre in Kuwait (1986), the calligraphy pieces for a mosque in the Netherlands, the calligraphy pieces for Fatih Mosque in Pfortzheim, Germany (1991), Jum’ah Mosque in Johannesburg (1997), and Almati Jum’ah Mosque in Kazakhstan. Çelebi has been teaching Islamic calligraphy since 1976 and has given practicing certificate (icazet) to over 50 students from Turkey and abroad. Many of Hasan Çelebi’s calligraphic panels can be seen in private collections in Turkey and abroad.
Çelebi has served as a jury member in the international Islamic calligraphy competitions organized by IRCICA every three years. He was awarded by Dubai and Kuwait Government for his service to the art of Islamic calligraphy. In 2008, he received Service Award from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In 2009, Çelebi was selected as an honorary member of supreme council in the Hoşnüvisân Encümeni in Tehran. As of today, he continues to work in Istanbul.
