Banu Cennetoğlu was born in Ankara in 1970. After studying psychology at Boğaziçi University between 1989 and 1994, she moved to Paris and pursued her study in photography at Speos, Paris Photographic Institute for a year. In 1996, she attended the International Festival of Photography, and received “Personal Research Award” in Biarritz. She then moved to New York, where she lived until 2002. From 1998 to 2000, she conceived and realized monthly TV programs for Manhattan Public Access with Judy Elkan as a series of 29mn videos in New York. Cennetoğlu was a guest artist at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam between 2002 and 2003. In 2006, she returned to Turkey and founded the BAS, a space focusing on artist books and other printed media works.

Cennetoğlu works with photography, installation and printed matter. Her research explores areas of socio-political uncertainty and documentation of such uncertainty as well as the questioning of the ability of the photographic medium to document. Her recent exhibitions include Geographies of the invisible / Max Museo, 53rd Venice Biennial, The Pavilion of Turkey, 5th Berlin Biennial, 10th Istanbul Biennial, 1st Athens Biennial, Brave New Worlds / La Coleccion Jumex and Walker Art Center and Wherever You Go /San Francisco Art Institute, and The List. Between 1993 and 2003, she published series of photographs in several international publications and printed matters such as Liberation (Fr), Purple (Fr), Crash (Fr), Big (Fr), Wired (USA), Vibe (USA), Raygun (USA), C Magazine (Be), Kilimanjaro (UK), Independent (UK), and Composite (Jp). Currently, Cennetoğlu lives and works in Istanbul.
