Leyla Gediz was born in Istanbul in 1974. After finishing Österreichisches Sankt Georgskolleg, she went to London to study at Foundation Course Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1994, and then Slade School of Fine Art, University of London between 1995 and 1998. She completed her master’s degree at Goldsmiths College, University of London between 1998 and 1999. During her time at the Slade School, she received three awards in the Still Life competitions. Gediz’s first exhibition “Cool” was held in 1999 in London which was organized by Giacomo Pica. Gediz also has exhibited internationally at the Istanbul Biennial, the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama, Japan and the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin etc. Her works are very personal and therefore entirely subjective: each painting has been inspired by an experience Gediz has had in her life and she herself calls the collection of her works “a visual diary”. Although it is autobiographical, her art is not entirely self absorbed as she engages with the viewers on a humorous and emotional level. Gediz currently lives and works in Istanbul.
