Dr. Çağan Hakkı Şekercioğlu (Istanbul, 1975) is the president of the conservation organization “KuzeyDoğa” and serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Utah. After graduating from Harvard University in 1997, he completed his doctoral degree at Stanford University in 2003. In 2007, he founded “KuzeyDoğa” an organization in Kars, and contributed to its activities while he worked as a senior research scientist at Stanford University. In 2008, Dr. Şekercioğlu received the Whitley Gold Award from The Princess Anne, Princess Royal for his project on protection, research, ecologic restoration, and ecotourism of Kuyucuk Lake in Kars. Due to these achievements, he was invited to the Buckingham Palace by The Princess Anne. In the same year, Şekercioğlu, who was counted among the top 1 % scientists cited in the world, was chosen as one of the “100 Hopes for the Future of Turkey" by Newsweek Turkey in the field of ecology and environmental science in the past 10 years. He was also selected as the “Best scientist in Turkey of the Year" by NTV / Radikal. In 2011, he was named the "National Geographic Rising explorer of the Year", and received the "Respect for Wetlands Award." His works have merited awards granted by the Turkish President Abdüllah Gül, Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Bağış, and Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs Veysel Eroğlu.
Dr. Şekercioğlu has seen 55 percent of the planet’s birds in 70 countries and on every continent. He meticulously gathers data from fieldwork and scientific literature, and combines it with global warming and habitat loss scenarios to estimate bird extinctions. He charts and analyzes the causes and consequences of vanishing bird populations via projects in biodiversity hot spots such as Costa Rica, Turkey, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Tanzania. Dr. Şekercioğlu has published three books and over 50 articles.
