Prof. Dr. Çiçek Derman was born in Ankara in 1945. She graduated from the Department of Art History, Faculty of Letter in Istanbul University. Since 1985 she has been serving as the chair of the branch of Traditional Turkish Handicraft Arts in the Faculty of Fine Art at Marmara University. She completed her doctorate at Marmara University, in the Social Science Institution in 1987. She became assistant professor in 1992 and associate professor in 1996 and tenured professor in 2002. She has been teaching on her major and counseling masters and doctoral dissertations.

Prof. Derman was one of the board members of the Faculty of Fine Art as well as the Institution of Fine Art in Marmara University. She was a program counselor of master’s and doctorate’s degrees. She was also one of the jurors for selecting Associate professorship candidates in arts (YÖK) and appointing different candidates to their tenured professorship.

She learned the art of Tezhip (illumination) from Dr. Süheyl Ünver (1898-1986) and Muhsin Demironat (1907-1983) and Rikkat Kunt (1903-1986). In 1982 she received a professional license (icâzet) from Rikkat Kunt. Between 1963 and 1965 she worked as an assistant of Dr. Süheyl Ünver at the History of Medicine and Deontology Department of Istanbul University. She learned Tezhip Art here and liked it very much. She decided to work on it in her whole life. Since 1972 she has taken classes in historical Tezhip Art from Prof. Dr. Süheyl Ünver at Kubbealtı Nakışhane for 2 years. Since 1976 she taught the Tezhip Art at Kubbealtı Nakışhane for 24 years. She participated in exhibitions in Genève, London, and Milano in 1981, and endeavored to show the beauty of Tezhip Art. Her first solo exhibition was held in Chicago in 1987 within the exhibition of Magnificent Sultan Süleyman. She has had many exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad: Bagdad (1988), Islamabad (1994), Frankfurt (1996), Tunisia (1997), Tokyo (2003), Sarajevo (2005), Algeria (2007).

When she has had her exhibitions in Turkey, she gave her conferences together in order to introduce this art. She has attended and presented her papers at many International congresses, symposiums and panels. She has written over 50 published articles in different languages. She published “Türk Tezyînî Sanatlarında Motifler / Motifs in Turkish Decorative Arts” in 1991 with Assoc. Prof. İnci Birol. (6th editions in 2007) and Rikkat Kunt Hoca Hanım 1903-1986 (Istanbul: Kubbealtı, 2013). She also prepared a brochure “Rikkat Kunt 100 Years Old” and it was published by the Department of Culture in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. (15 Nov. 2003)

Prof. Derman is one of the selection committee of the State Turkish Decorative Art which has been held by Turkish Ministry of Culture since 1990. In 2003 she was invited to Japan with Prof. Uğur Derman by Toua University and had her own exhibition and conference.

Her works can be seen in several private collections: I. Cemil Schick private collection (USA), Turkish Petrol Foundation collection (Istanbul), Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu private collection (Istanbul). In 2013, Prof. Dr. Derman received the Culture and Arts Grand Award from the Turkish President Abdullah Gül in Ankara.
