Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turgut Cansever was born in Antalya in 1920. He graduated from Galatasaray High School and studied architecture in Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. In 1949, he received his doctoral degree with his thesis “A Stylistic Analysis of Ottoman and Seljuk Column Heads” at Istanbul University. He established his own architectural firm in 1951. In 1960, he became an associate professor with his thesis “Problems of Modern Architecture” at his alma mater.

Between 1959 and 1961, Dr. Cansever served as the planning consultant for Istanbul Municipality. He started the regional planning studies in Turkey with a group of professionals. He worked as the head of the Istanbul Metropolitan Planning Authority during 1974-1975. In 1974-1976, he was also a member of Turkish delegation to European Council. Dr. Cansever served as the consultant at the Istanbul Municipality for many projects such as resettlements, tourism investments, conservation, restoration programs, transportation and planning of the harbor and infrastructure from 1975 to 1980. In 1979-1980, he also served as the consultant at the Ankara Municipality. In 1983, he was one of the member of Master Jury for the Aga Khan Architectural Awards together with Charles Moore, Roland Simounet, James Stirling, Parid Wardi bin Sudin, Rifat Chadirji, Habib Fida-Ali, Mübeccel Kiray, and Ismail Serageldin. Dr. Cansever is the only architect who holds three Aga Khan Awards. In October 2008, he was awarded the President’s Culture and Art Grand Award in Architecture for 2008 by the Presidency of the Turkish Republic.
