Prof. Dr. Gönül Öney was born in Berlin in 1933. She graduated from the Department of Art History in the Faculty of Language, History, and Geography at Ankara University in 1955. She completed her doctoral degree at her alma mater in 1961. She became Associate Professor in 1967 and full Professor in 1972. After teaching at Ankara University between 1957 and 1981, Öney served as a Department Chair, Senate member and Dean in the Department of Art History, the Faculty of Letters at Ege University until 2001. Between 1983 and 1987, she served as a board member in the High Commission of Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Turkey, which was nominated by the President of the Republic of Turkey. In 1988-1992, she served as a commission member of UNESCO Turkish National Commission. Between 1992 and 2000, she served as a vice-chancellor at Ege University.
Prof. Öney has received many awards including an eminent service medal from Ege University Senate, 2001 Service Award from Eczacıbaşı Izmir Culture Art and Education Foundation, and Honorary Member Award of Ataturk Culture Center. She has served as a national committee member, executive board member in many organizations and committees such as the International Congress of Turkish Art, ICOMOS Turkish National Committee, European Council, Aegean Social Research Foundation, Izmir Cultural Foundation, Aegean Modern Education Foundation, Elginkan Foundation, International Bursa Research Committee, Turkish Economic and Social Historical Foundation, Suna & İnan Kıraç Mediterranean Research Institute, and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Art Committee. Prof. Öney has published numerous articles and books and has participated in various conferences and symposiums in Turkey and abroad.
