Prof. Dr. Ömür Bakırer received her Ph.D. in Art History at the University of Ankara, after receiving her Master’s degree at the University of Chicago. She pursued her post doctoral study in Architectural Conservation at New York University. She took a short course of architectural conservation at the University of York. Bakırer taught at the Architecture Department of Middle East Technical University for a long time and retired recently.
Her research interest cover a wide range of topics such as history of Seljuk and Ottoman architecture, emphasis on building types and the use of traditional building materials, written and visual sources for the study Anatolian, architecture, especially Seljuk and Ottoman periods, architectural conservation, and archaeometry. Prof. Bakırer has participated in many national and international symposiums and conferences and published many articles and chapters in books. She published several books including Selçuklu Öncesi ve Selçuklu Dönemi Anadolu Mimarisinde Tuğla Kullanımı (Ankara: Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, 1981) and Onüç ve Ondördüncü Yüzyıllarda Anadolu Mihrabları (Ankara: Türk Tarih Kurumu Yayınları, 2000).
Besides her academic career, Prof. Dr. Bakırer is a ceramist. She had her first ceramic solo exhibition in Ankara in 1959. Since then, she has held many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad.
