Prof. Dr. Tarcan Yılmaz was born in Giresun in 1941. She completed her doctoral degree at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies in 1972 with her doctoral thesis "Ottoman Metal Arts." Since 1980, she has been teaching at Istanbul University. She received her professorship in 1995. Prof. Yılmaz is the author of The Holy Ka′ba a Study on the Collection of Locks and keys kept at the Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul. (in Arabic, Istanbul: IRCICA, 1993). She has participated in many congresses, and published numerous articles and proceedings in many journals and books. Currently, Prof. Yılmaz serves as the Head of the Department of Art History in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University.
