Fahrettin Demiryürek Sepetçioğlu was born in Istanbul in 1941. He graduated from the School of Applied Arts in 1965. After his military service, he was accepted to the Yale School of Art and Architecture with a scholarship in 1968. In 1970 he obtained his Master′s degree in Fine Arts at Yale University.

While studying at Yale University, Sepetçioğlu worked as an assistant for Prof. Armin Hoffman and Prof. Christopher Pullman. They found Sepetçioğlu very successful and supported to get a special fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation for him. Starting in 1970, Sepetçioğlu worked on painting and sculpture with Prof. Alvin Eisenman, Prof. Erwin Hauer, Prof. Lester Johnson and Prof. Knox Martin at Yale University. The artist adopted the “Hard Edge” style in painting and minimalist style in sculpture. He worked on typographic paintings with Prof. Norman Ives and Prof. Herbest Matter. In the 1980s, Sepetçioğlu conducted his research on the “De Stijl” (The Style) movement and its founders such as Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg as well as Russian painter Kasimir Malevich. In 1980, Sepetçioğlu decided to follow Prof. Josef Albers’ advice, which had been on his mind since 1970, and began exploring his "own culture" and abstract paintings. He started working on the Turkish-Ottoman Art of Calligraphy and Arab Typography. After graduation, he continuously kept his professors up to date on his research and work. He drew more than 2000 sketches. Since 2000 Sepetçioğlu has painted Calligraphy and prepared Arab Typography on toile with a contemporary interpretation.

In 2006 he met Nilgün Şensoy, an Assistant Professor at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts and an art collector specializing on the traditional Turkish arts, especially the art of calligraphy. Since 2007, Sepetçioglu has exhibited his modern calligraphic works at the Nilguün Şensoy Culture and Arts House. His work can be seen in many public and private collections in the US, Turkey, Qatar, The United Arab Emirates and Europe.
