Prof. Suhandan Özay Demirkan was born in Izmir. She finished her art education in Decorative Arts and Textiles at Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. In 1971, she received an award from Hochschule Für Angewandte Kunst. She completed her doctoral degree at Dokuz Eylül University. In 1996, she founded her gallery and atelier in Alaçatı, Izmir. Until February in 2011, Demirkan had lectured and served as the Head of the Textile Department in the Faculty of Fine Art of Dokuz Eylül University. She also worked to establish the Department of Textile and Fashion Design and the Department of Fashion Accessories Design. Demirkan has had many solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Her works can be seen in the archives of the Angewandte Kunst Museum in Wien, Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz (Poland), Musee des Tissus et des Art Decoratifs in Lyon, Virtual Shoe Museum in Belgium, and in many public and private collections. Demirkan has published her articles and books on fashion design, modern textile and weaving art, and contemporary ethnic accessories. Currently, she continues her works at her gallery in Alaçatı.
