Rıfat Özbek was born in Istanbul in 1953. He is known for his exotic, ethnically-inspired outfits. He moved to England in 1970 in order to study architecture at Liverpool University and graduated in 1972. He then studied fashion design at Saint Martin′s School of Art and Design in London between 1974 and 1977. He has designed for the seminal 1970s designer Walter Albini (Trell, Milan) between 1978 and 1980. Özbek then worked as a designer for the chain store Monsoon in London between 1980 and 1984. He founded his own firm, “Ozbek” in London in 1984. He established second line, O, renamed Future Ozbek in 1987. He produced clothes under the license by Aeffe SpA, Italy since 1988. He launched New Age Collection in 1989. In 1995, he produced signature fragrance “Ozbek” and “Özbek 1001”. Özbek also designed carpet for Christopher Farr in 1999. He was awarded "Fashion Designer of the Year" in England in 1988 and 1992. Özbek designed for Pollini brand between 2004 and 2008. After retiring from fashion world, Özbek moved back to Turkey and opened his cushion boutiques in Istanbul.
