Cevat Çapan was born in Kocaeli in 1933. He graduated from the Department of English Literature at the University of Cambridge. After working at BBC in 1957, he started teaching at the Department of English Language and Literature in the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University. He became an Associate Professor in 1968 and full Professor in 1975. In 1980 Çapan taught at Mimar Sinan University. In the next year, he went to New York with a Fulbright scholarship and taught English Literature. Later, he taught at Anadolu University and Boğaziçi University, the Department of American Literature. In 1996 Çapan served as Dean in the Faculty of Literature at Yeditepe University, where he taught English Literature for 16 years.
Prof. Çapan published his first poem in Varlık journal in 1952. Since then he has published his poems in various literary journals such as Adam Sanat, Seçilmiş Hikâyeler, Varlık, Yeditepe, and Yücel. He has also published many books and translated numerous poems from English, Italian and Greek to Turkish. Prof. Çapan has received several awards including a Bahçet Necatigil Poetry Award (1986), a Golden Orange Poetry Award (2008), and a Mersin City Literary Award (2015). Prof. Çapan currently continues his work in Istanbul.
