Metin Cengiz was born in Kars in 1953. He graduated from the School of Foreign Languages at Erzurum Atatürk University in 1976. He taught French language in Erzurum, Kars and Istanbul between 1977 and 1987. During this time, he studied and graduated from the Department of French Language at Marmara University. Due to the 12 September 1980 Turkish coup d′état, he was arrested and incarcerated for two years. In 1993, he began teaching again and continued until 2002.
Cengiz has written poems, theoretical writings, and translated poetry works. His first poem “Nasıl Şiir” was published in Democrat newspaper in 1980. Since then his poems have been published in various literary magazines. He prepared and presented the television program “Şiir and Resim” on Karadeniz TV. In 1996, Cengiz received Behçet Necatigil Poetry Award. He won 2010 Melih Cevdet Anday Poetry Award for his works “Sonsuzluk Çiseler Durgun Sularda” and “Dünyaya Katkımız Bir Ebru Vurgusu” in 2010. Cengiz was awarded the International Tudor Arghezi Poetry Prize by the Writers Union and the Targu Jiu City Council and Cultural Center in Romania. Cengiz is a member of Writers Union of Turkey, Türk PEN, and Society of Authors. In 2005, he founded Digraf Publication with his friends and published many books on poetry. In 2010, he started publishing the poetry magazine “Şiirden”. His poems have been translated into French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Bosnian, Russian, Romanian, Arabic, Hebrew, Azeri Turkish, Serbian, and Kurdish. Cengiz has published French book “Apres le tempête et autres poêmes” in 2009. His poetry works have been published in Romanian literary magazine “Convorbiri Literare” and “Poesia” in 2011. Currently, Cengiz works as a general director of “Şiirden” magazine.
