Burhan Sönmez was born in Haymana, Ankara in 1965. He finished his primary and middle school education in Polatlı. After graduating from the Law Faculty at Istanbul University, he worked as a lawyer and editor for a while. He has also written articles about literature, culture, politics for various newspapers and magazines such as daily Birgün and L′Unita and monthly Birikim and Notos. Sönmez then moved to England. His first novel "Kuzey" was published in 2009. It was followed by his second novel "Masumlar" (2011), which won the Sedat Simavi Literary Award. It has been translated into English, Italian, and Serbian.
His article "Tarih Öncesi Köpekler" was included in the book "Bir Dersim Hikâyesi," which was edited by Murathan Mungan. Sönmez is a member of Turkish PEN and English PEN. He teaches literature and novels at Middle East Technical University. Sönmez currently lives and works both in Istanbul and Cambridge.
