Nedim Gürsel was born in Gaziantep in 1951. He spent his childhood in Balıkesir and currently lives in Paris. After finishing Galatasaray High School in 1970, Gürsel went to Paris and graduated from the Department of Modern French Literature at Sorbonne University in 1974. He completed his doctorate on the comparative literature at Sorbonne University. As of today Gürsel teaches Turkish literature at Sorbonne University and works as the research director on Turkish Literature at the International French Science Research Center (CNRS). He is a journalist as well as a researcher and the member of PEN Writer Association, the House of Writers in Paris and the Mediterranean Academy. Gürsel is the author of a score of novels, short stories, travelogues and essays that have been translated into over twelve languages. Since 1966 his novels and essays were published in magazines such as “Yeni Ufuklar”, “Yeni Edebiyat”, “Birikim” and “Milliyet Sanat ve Gösteri”. His writing is in multiple forms, mixing lyricism, love songs, humor, epic, erotism, or even fantasy. Gürsel has received many prizes both in Turkey and abroad. Some of his novels were adopted into theater and films. In 2013, Gürsel received a prestigious French award, the "Priz Méditéettanée" for his book The Devil, the Angel and the Communist.
