Nursel Duruel was born in Şarki Karaağaç, Isparta in 1941. After finishing her high school education at Istanbul High School for Girls in 1960, she graduated from the Department of Archaeology at Istanbul University. In 1965, she started working as a producer for TRT Istanbul Radio, which made her one the first producers of the channel, and produced programs about culture, art and literature until 1985. In 1985, she retired from her job at TRT and started working as a copywriter, TV writer and encyclopedia writer. Between 1992 and 1993, she worked as a manager at BRT (Istanbul Municipality Radio Television). She also continued to work as a freelance producer for TRT. Duruel developed a program entitled “Yayın Dünyası” for Istanbul Radio. She reviewed short stories on the TRT Channel 2 program “Okudukça” until 2010.
Her first short story “Geyikler, Annem ve Almanya” (1979) was awarded with the First prize in the 1980 Academy Kitabevi Literature Prize as well as the 1982 Sait Faik Short Story Prize. It was translated into Macedonian Language. This story was among the "Top Ten Stories Written in Turkish Since 1980," a research carried out by Imge Oykuler magazine in 2005. It was also adapted to a small screen in 1982 by TRT director Tunber Baytok. A story entitled "Burgaç" in her second and latest short story collection "Yazılı Kaya" (1992) was awarded with a second place in the 1990 Yunus Nadi Unpublished Short Story Competition.
Among her other books are "Güvercin Curnatası - Cemal Süreya ile Konuşmalar" (1997, compilation), "Cemal Sureya - Şairin Hayatı Şiire Dahil" (1995 and 2011, biography)with Feyza Perincek, "A’dan Z’ye Cemal Süreya" (2003), "Muzaffer Aksoy – Bilime Adanmış Bir Ömür" (2005, biography) with Prof. Orhan Ulutin and Prof. Çiğdem Altay, and "İnsanlar İçinde Bir İnsan - Sait Faik Hikâye Armağanı Antolojisi 1955-2007" (2007) and "Genç Olmak" (2009, short story). Duruel’s short stories have been translated into English, German and French and featured in textbooks in Germany. She is a member of Turkish PEN Centre. Duruel currently continues her work in Istanbul.
