Bertan Onaran was born in 1937. He graduated from the French Language and Literature Department in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University. His first translated wok was published in 1963. After then Onaran translated numerous literary works of famous authors including Cervantes, Emile Zola, Stendhal, Albert Camus, Mayakovski and Jules Verne. In 1972 Onaran received a translation award from the Turkish Language Association (TDK) for his translated work "Konuk Kız." He wrote columns for Cumhuriyet newspaper. Bertan Onaran passed away in Istanbul in 2016.
