Leyla Gamsız was born in Istanbul in 1921. During her middle school years, she studied arts from Eşref Üren. She graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University. She then studied painting at the workshop of Bedri Rahmi in the Painting Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. Gamsız had her first solo exhibition at the French Consulate in Istanbul in 1949. She went to Paris with a scholarship from the French Government and worked at the workshop of Andre Lhote. She won prizes in Academy in 1964 and 1967, and received the 11th Simavi Foundation Visual Arts Award in 1987. She was one of the leading artists of 1950′s. Gamsız passed away in Istanbul in 2010.
