Mustafa Aslıer was born in Bulgaria in 1926. He studied gravure at the Painting-Work Department of Ankara Gazi Institute for Education in 1946-1949. He then went to Germany to study typography at Munich Academy of Graphic Arts (1953-1954) and Stuttgart Hochschule Für Medien (1955-1958). After coming back to Turkey, Aslıer worked as Department Chair of the Graphic Department at Marmara University in 1971-1977. Between 1957 and 1982, Aslıer taught printmaking and book design at Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, he also served as the founder and director of the State Applied School of Fine Arts. He taught at the Graphic Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University in 1982-1992; and served as Dean in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University in 1985-1991. He retired from Marmara University in 1992.
Aslıer held 43 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 50 group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He received many national and international awards for his works including Achievement award in an exhibition, which was organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey in 1973. In the following year, he won an award of merit at the State Painting and Sculpture exhibition.
Prof. Dr. Aslıer established his own workshop, where he trained young students. He published 25 articles and six books including Psichologische Eignungs-Untersuchungen (1956), Mesleki Eğitimde Sistem Değişikliği (1962), Var olmayana Biçim Vermek (1962), Grafik Sanatlar Tarihi ve Yorumlar (1962), Türkiye’de Özgünbaskı Resim Sanatı (1986), and Çağdaş Türk Sanatı Tarihi, IV. Cilt, Resim I (1987). Prof. Dr. Aslıer passed away in Istanbul in 2015.
