Ömer Lütfi Akad was born in Istanbul in 1916. After finishing his secondary education at French Saint Jeanne d’ Arc School and Galatasaray High School, he graduated from Istanbul College of Economics and Business. After working at Osmanlı Bank for a while, he served as an accountant in the Lale Film. He began writing scenarios for theater and films. He then worked as a financial consultant and film director in the Sema Film. Akad began directing films in 1947. The film "Vurun Kahpeye / Kill the Whore" (1949), which he shot as a scriptwriter and director, won high praise. He shot more than 100 films including  "Tahir ile Zühre" (1951), "Kanun Namına" (1952), "İngiliz Kemal Lavrens′e Karşı" (1952), "Çalsın Sazlar Oynasın Kızlar" (1953), "Kalbimin Şarkısı" (1955), "Cilalı İbo′nun Çilesi" (1957), "Tanrı′nın Bağışı Orman" (1964), "Hudutların Kanunu" with Yılmaz Güney (1966), "Kızılırmak Karakoyun" (1967), "Kurbanlık Katil" with Yılmaz Güney (1967), "Vesikalı Yarim" (1968), "Kader Böyle İstedi" (1968), "Bir Teselli Ver" (1971), "Irmak" (1972), "Yaralı Kurt" (1972), and "Gökçe Çiçek" (1973). The 1970′s trilogy "Gerin /The Bride" (1973), "Düğün / The Wedding" (1974) and "Diyet / The Sacrifice" (1975) was considered his masterpiece. In 1974, Akad received the "Best Director" and the "Best Film" Awards for the film "Düğün" in the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. In 1975, he filmed Ömer Seyfeddin′s stories "Topuz," "Ferman," "Pembe İncili Kaftan," "Diyet," and "Bir Ceza Avukatının Anıları" for television. Besides shooting films, Akad taught acting, directing and scenario at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University from 1975 to 1985. In 2009, he received an honorary award in the 16th International Golden Boll Film Festival. Akad passed away in Istanbul in 2011.
