Sıtkı Olçar was born in Kütahya in 1948. He was inspired by the soil of his native land and started making tiles passionately. In 1973, he founded his own studio, "Osmanlı Çini", and has pursued his works. Olçar became famous as a true artist in this field. Using ancient patterns and forms, he put traditional essence of Iznik and Kütahya tiles into his works and sought new forms as well. Since 1980, he focused particularly to make Iznik tiles, and brought a new dimension and dynamism to Kütahya tiles. Sıtkı Olçar devoted himself to discovering the secret of the coral red, which had been lost for 300 years. It took a new approach to Kütahya ceramics. He had many solo exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. At the Fifth Crafts Exhibition of the Balkan Countries held in Volos in 1986, Turkey was represented by the works of Sıtkı Olçar. Olçar’s works can be seen both in national and international museums and private collections. In 2010, Olçar was awarded as one of the seven Turkish Living Treasures by UNESCO and the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. He passed away in 2010.
