Belmin Söylemez was born in Istanbul in 1966. She graduated from The Queen’s College in London in 1984. After returning to Turkey, Söylemez has worked as a copy writer, assistant director, director, producer, film editor, and scriptwriter in the cinema, advertising, and TV sector. Söylemez has also worked for foreign TV channels as a film editor and documentary producer. She directed music videos and promotion films in Turkey and Holland. Her short films and documentary films have been screened in many international festivals and Söylemez received many awards. Those works have been broadcasted in various international TV channels such as Arte, SVT Sweden, YLE Finland, and SBS Australia. Her films have also been exhibited in many exhibitions including "Call Me Istanbul" (ZKM Karlsruhe, Germany) and "Serbest Vuruş" (9th Istanbul Biennial). In 2012 Söylemez received the Best Film Award for her film "Şimdiki Zaman" (2011) in the 19th Adana Ball Film Festival, where she also won the SIYAD Best Film Award and Yılmaz Güney Award.
Besides being a film director, Söylemez is a photographer and has exhibited her works at İFSAK and the Italian Culture Center. She currently lives and works in Istanbul.
