Canan Gerede was born in New York in 1945. She studied theater in Caracas, Venezuela and New York (American Academy of Dramatic Arts). Between 1978 and 1982, she worked as an assistant of Atıf Yılmaz and Yılmaz Güney. In 1983, she wrote screen play for German film "Germany under Thorns", and became one of producers for Thomas Harlan’s film "Wundkanal."
In 1987, Gerede directed the video "The Other Side." It was followed by several documentary films such as "Pass the Bludwurst Please" (1987), "Abdin, Sen Mutluluğun Resmini Yapabilir misin?" (1988), and "Peçenin Ardındaki Kadınlar – Women Behind the Veil" (1993). In 1991, her first long film "Robert’s Movie" was screened in Cannes International Critics Week. She received the Best Director Award with her second long film "Aşk Ölümden Soğuktur" in the 32nd Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival. Currently, Gerede lives and works in Istanbul and Paris.
