Prof. Dr. Oğuz Makal was born in Denizli in 1950. He finished primary and middle school in Izmir. He graduated from the Department of Radio-TV of the College of Press and Information in the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University. Between 1976 and 1979, he worked at the Manajans / J.W. Thompson and the Pars / McCann Ericsson advertising company. In 1980, he became an assistant at the Department of Cinema-TV in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Ege University. He completed his master’s degree at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Ege University; and doctoral degree at the Institute of Social Sciences of Dokuz Eylül University. He is the first person to obtain a doctorate on cinema in Turkey. He became an assistant Professor in 1987, an associate professor in 1992 and a professor in 1997.
Makal has published his caricatures in magazines such as Yansıma and Gerçek Sinema, and had many caricature exhibitions. In 1975, he won the merit award in the Vercelli International Caricature Competition in Italy. He served on the administrative board of the Caricature Association. In addition, Makal organized the International Izmir Film Festival (1988-2001), the IEF Cinema Burada Film Festival (2001- ) and Turkish Cinema Days Activities at Beykent University.
Makal has taught in the Department of Cinema and TV of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylül University and Beykent University. He has also written many articles on cinema for magazines and newspapers. In addition, he has shot many short films and documentary films. Makal has also served on juries in many film festivals. Currently, He serves as Department Chair in the Cinema-TV Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Beykent University.
