Umur Bugay was born in Ankara in 1941. He graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1964, and started working at the Arena Theatre in 1962. He worked as an actor, director, and dramaturgist at the Gülriz Sururi - Engin Cezzar Theatre, the Halkı Oyuncuları Theatre, and the Dostolar Theatre. In 1972, Bugay began writing plays. Most of his works were staged at the Devekuşu Kabare Theatre. After 1975, he wrote stories and articles for various newspapers and magazines. In 1974, Bugay wrote the screen play "Cemil" together with Atıf Yılmaz and Yılmaz Güney, and started working in the field of cinema. The screen play of the film "Hababam Sınıfı" (1975) is also one of Bugay′s works. In 1988, he became famous for his TV series "Bizimkiler", which was broadcasted on TRT. Bugay also worked as a producer. He has published the story book "Türk Küçükleri."
