Erden Kıral was born in Kocaeli in 1942. He graduated from the Ceramic Department in the Fine Arts Academy. He worked as an assistant of famous directors such as Osman Seden, Yılmaz Güney, Bilge Olgaç and Mehmet Dinler. After shooting advertising films for a while, Kıral shot two short films: “Kumcu Ali Yaşar” and “Unutulmuşlar”. He then went to France, and shot documentary film about the life of Moroccan workers in France. He wrote critiques in the magazines “Yedinci Sanat” and “Çağdaş Sinema”, and directed the magazines “Gerçek Sinema” and “Güney”. In 1978, Kıral shot his first long film “Kanal”. In 1979, he shot the long film “Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde” and won many international awards: he received signal reward in the Strasbourg Film Festival, and “the Best Director” in the Antalya Film Festival. Since then, Kıral has shot many films and has been awarded in various international film festivals and universities. In 1983, he started living in Berlin. Since 1984, he is a member of Berlin Akademie der Künst. In 2009, he received the honorable award in the 4th Köyceğiz Film Festival. Currently, Kıral lives and works in Istanbul and Berlin.
