Binnur Karaevli was born in Istanbul. She finished her education at Robert College High School in Istanbul. She started her theatre company in Istanbul when she was fifteen where she produced and directed new plays. She then went to the US, and studied Drama at Carnegie-Mellon University, and started her career as a theatre director in 1989. Karaevli received the prestigious Bud Yorkin Directing Award, for her work in directing theatre, “Right Out of College”. Karaevli worked as an assistant director and a dramaturg at the Arena Stage, Comedia Dell Arte and San Diego Repertory Theatres. During her tenure at the San Diego Repertory Company, she co-founded and co-produced "WordWorks", a literary theatre laboratory for new plays. She then worked as a director and a literary manager at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. In 1991, Karaevli founded the "Platform", an acclaimed political cabaret at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. In 1995, she completed her master’s degree at the University of Southern California’s Graduate Film School. Karaevli has directed and produced several short documentaries including “Global Friendship through Space Education”, “California Culture” and “Sabancı Calligraphy Collection”. She is also a writer and director of two short narratives: “Evelyn of the Desert”, which won the Best Short Film Award in the 1997 Cine 5 International Film Festival in Turkey, and the Jury Award in 1996 from New Orleans and Albany International Film Festivals; and “Dance of the Whirling Dervish”, which won a finalist in the 1996 Nuremberg International Film Festival in Germany, and the Jury Award in the same year from Claremont-Ferrand Short Film Festival in France.
Karaevli has worked on many independent documentaries and narrative films in the US, Germany and Turkey. She has extensive international producing credits for many commercial production companies including Ridley Scott & Associates. She won Audience Award in the Leeds Film Festival (2001), and the Best Documentary Award at the Moondance International Film Festival and the WinFemme Film Festival for “Searching for Paradise”, a documentary about cultural identity (2002). Currently, Karaevli continues to live and work in Los Angeles.
