Ümit Ünal was born in Tire in 1965. He graduated from the Cinema and TV Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylül University in 1985. While he studied at his University, he shot many short films and received many awards. His first screen play for the film "Teyzem" was very successful and awarded the first prize in the Milliyet Newspaper Script Competition in 1986. This screen play was filmed by Halit Refiğ. His first film “9 (Dokuz)” was nominated to the Best Foreign Language Film Category in the 75th Annual Academy in Cannes in 2003, as Turkey′s official submission. In 2004, the film “Anlat İstanbul”, which Ünal wrote screen play, was directed by four different directors. In 2008, The film “Ara”, which he prepared the screen play and directed, was awarded Jury Special Prize in the 27th International Istanbul Film Festival, and the "Best Script" and the "Best Editing" Prize in the 15th Altın Koza Film Festival. Recently, Ünal prepared the screen play from Hasan Ali Topbaş’s novel “Gölgesizler” and directed it. He has published three books: Amerikan Güzeli (stories, Oğlak Publications, 1993), Aşkın Alfabesi (novel, İyi Şeyler Publishing, 1996) and Kuyruk (novel, Oğlak Publications, 2001).
