Ataç Sezer was born in Istanbul in 1979. Sezer studied piano and musicology, along with a traditional Ottoman music instrument, the Ney (reed flute). He then went to Germany and wrote his first compositional piece with Argentinean composer Diego H. Feinstein. Later, Sezer continued his composition studies with Matthias Pintscher in Munich, and Dieter Schnebel in Berlin.
To compose his works, Sezer uses quite different sources such as the modal Turkish sound systems, for which he has considered new notation forms, and mikrotonal music as well as the electronic music. He experiments with new play technologies and combines western and eastern instruments.
Sezer first received recognition with projects for the German theatre of Göttingen (2005) and the DOCUMENTA (2007). In 2008, he received a music scholarship with his work “Peschrev”, a piece written for the Ney, E- Bass and electronics in Munich. The next year, he won the art endowment of the North Rhine-Westphalia Künstlerdorf Schöppingen, working at the studio Galata in Istanbul in 2010 as part of the residence program for the endowment. In the same year, Sezer received commissions from musica viva, Musik Triennale Köln, and Hör Blicke 21. He was invited to perform his work at the international music Festival Heidelberger Frühling. In 2011, his piece titled “Mirror-Reversed”, which he was commissioned to compose for the Young Euro Classic, premiered in Berlin. Currently, Sezer lives and works in Munich.
