Betin Güneş was born in Istanbul in 1957. From 1964 to 1974, he studied at the Municipal Conservatory in Istanbul under Ferdi Statzer, Cenan Akın and Ergican Saydam. At Istanbul College of Music, he gained a postgraduate diploma in piano with distinction under Professor J. Uluğ (1979) and in composition under Professor Ilhan Usmanbaş (1980). Güneş also graduated in journalism from Istanbul University.
In 1997, Güneş gave an opening concert with the orchestra, which was organized by Turks who worked as musician in Europe, at the International Eskişehir Festival. In 1980, a scholarship granted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) took him to Cologne Music Academy where he qualified in composition under Professor J. Blume, in conducting under Professor. G. Fork and in trombone under Professor B. Slokar. Güneş also studied electronic music under Professor U. Humpert. After graduating from Cologne Museum Academy in 1985, he started composition. He was awarded for his composition “Bilimde Herşey Vardır” at the 15th National Electric Acoustic Composition in Bourges. Since 1988, Betin Güneş has been the conductor of the Cologne Symphony Orchestra and of the Ensemble Mondial String Orchestra.
His award-winning compositions include: "Bilimde her şey vardır" (electronic music), "Orchesterstück 2.5" and "Bıdık" (symphony for strings). Besides his appearances on radio and television, Güneş has also recorded a number of discs and CDs. As a guest conductor, Güneş has given concerts in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland, Luxembourg, France and Brazil. In addition, he has also conducted Turkish symphony orchestras. He has worked with famous soloists such as Branimir Slokar, Mattias Buchholz, Franz Klein, Jong Chang Cho, Midori Koto, Hans Jürgen Schicht and Thomas Horch. Güneş has written chamber music, 13 symphonies, as well as electronic music and solo pieces.
