Füsun Köksal was born in Bursa in 1973. She graduated from the Faculty of Music and Performing Art at Bilkent University in 1996. She then went to Cologne, and studied both composition with Kryzsztof Meyer, and theory with Johannes Schild at the Hochshule für Musik Köln, graduating in 2002. After returning to Turkey, she taught composition at Bilkent University from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, she received a “Century Fellowship” from the University of Chicago, where she studied composition with Marta Ptaszynska and Shulamit Ran.
In 2010-2011, she worked as a visiting professor of theory and composition at the University of Pittsburgh. Her oeuvre ranges from solo to orchestral works, and her music has been performed by the prominent artists and ensembles at many festivals throughout Europe and America. She has received many awards including Second prize at the Third International Deutsche-Polnische Kompositions Wettbewerb, Köln (1998), Regional awards of the SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Competition (2006, 2007, 2008), Third prize at the Sixth Concours International de Composition Henri Dutilleux (2008). She was one of the finalists at the Second International Composer’s Competition, Reggello (2005); and nominated for the 2009 Festival Pablo Casals Third International Composers Competition. Currently, Köksal continues her doctoral degree at the University of Chicago.
