Nazan Öncel was born in Izmir in 1956. She graduated from Izmir Conservatory. Her interest in music started early in her childhood. She began singing songs and playing guitar in her middle school years. In 1961, she acted a leading role in the film “Acı Tesadüf”. For three years from 1969, she worked with “Kervanlar Orkestrası”, and then joined the band “Çılgınlar”, which performed at weddings and celebrations. In 1975, she won first place in a song contest which was organized by the Izmir Radio station in 1975.
In 1978, Öncel released her first 45 album, including the songs “Sana Kul Köle Olmuşum” and “Kadr bu çekeceksin”. She participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with her songs “Hırçın Kız” (1980) and “Neden” (1981). In 1982, she released her first LP album “Yağmur Duası”. During 1983, she performed in Bursa Çelik Palace Hotel many times. In 1991, she released her album “Bir Hadise Var”, which contains all her songs. 2 years later, Öncel released her second album “Ben Böyle Aşk Görmedim”, from which the songs “Aşk Beklemez”, “Nazınla Dünya Sazınla”, “Geceler Kara Tren” and “Dillere Düşeceğiz” became great hits. With these songs, she achieved the status of high class lyric writer. Under her own company Naz Müzik, Öncel released “Göç” (1995), which was praised by music critics as the best album in the last 50 years of Turkish music history. Her album “Sokak Kızı” (1996) also included hit songs such as “Sokak Kızı”, “Erkekler de Yanar”, “A Bu Hayat”, “Bırak Seveyim”, and “Rahat Edeyim”, which have a more rock-oriented sound. Later she released “Demir Leblebi” (1999), “Yan yana Fotoğraf Çektirelim” (2004), which became one of her best seller albums, and “7n Bitirdin” (2006). Öncel produced Hamit Ündaş’s “Janti” album and sang two songs with Ündaş for the album. In her album “Hatırına Sustum” (2008), she wrote a song “Canım Benim Nasılsın” for Orhan Pamuk’s Masumiyet Museum.
Öncel has received many awards for her songs. She has written and composed many songs for numerous artists including Tarkan, Gülben Ergen, Gülşen, Yonca Evcimik, Tuğba Ozerk and Tuğba Ekinci.
