Dr. Turgut Pöğün was born in Izmir in 1977. He began his music career by training with the piano. He continued his studies with Prof. Dr. Fırat Kutluk in 1989. In 1995, Pöğün was admitted to the Department of Theory and Composition in the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Bilkent University. Following his graduation in 2001, he was enrolled at Istanbul Technical University′s Center for Advanced Studies in Music with Prof. Dr. İlhan Usmanbaş. In 2002, Pöğün was accepted to the Department of Composition at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands where he continued his studies and received his master’s degree in 2004. After returning to Turkey, Pöğün continued his studies at the Institute of Music and Performing Arts of Bilkent University and completed his doctoral degree in the arts in 2008. Throughout his training, he worked with (in chronological order) Işın Metin, Elhan Bakihanov, İlhan Usmanbaş, Rene Uijlenhoet, and Peter-Jan Wagemans on composition. Pöğün participated in many master classes and workshops of various composers, including Franco Donatoni, Klaas de Vries, Klaus Ager, Özkan Manav, and Kamran İnce.
Pöğün’s compositions have been performed at national and international events and received national recognition awards. Although his works are mainly chamber music, he also has solo and orchestral compositions. His music has been performed by Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra, AMIS Honor Band and Choir, Hezarfen Ensemble, Istanbul Modern Music Ensemble, Bilkent Ensemble, Golden Horn Brass Quintet, Duoist among others, and under conductors including Orhun Orhon, Işın Metin, Jussi Jaatinen and Mikko Vaananen. Pöğün’s music has also been performed in many festivals such as Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, Istanbul International Music Festival, Bilgi New Music Days, Bilkent New Music Days, and MIAM sunar.
Administrative responsibilities of Pöğün include the following positions: Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs of Bilkent University, Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Academic Coordinator of the Theory-Composition Branch, Artistic Director of Bilkent New Music Days, Board Member of BESOM (Association of Composers, Conductors and Musicologists), and TRT (Turkish Radio and Television) Polyphonic Music Department Advisory Board Member. Currently, Pöğün works as an Assistant Professor at the Music Department of Bilgi University.
