Yalçın Tura was born in Istanbul in 1934. He learned piano and violin in his childhood. He finished Galatasaray High School in 1954. In his high school, Tura studied violin with Seyfettin Asal; and theory and harmony with Demirhan Altuğ and Cemal Reşit Rey. Tura graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul University in 1960. He continued his music study. In 1955, Tura started composing music for films and stages professionally. In 1976, he worked as a teacher at State Turkish Music Conservatory of Istanbul Technical University. In 1988, he became a Department Chair of Musicology Department. Between 1997 and 2001, Tura served as a director of conservatory. In 2001, he retired from conservatory. His papers, which were read in many congress and symposiums, were gathered together and published as a book “Türk Musikisinin Mes’eleleri” in 1988. Tura is the member of executive committee of SACEM (Professional Union of the National Musical Works). He was a director of Science Committee of MESAM (Professional Union of the Turkish Musical Works Owners). In addition, he served as a jury and a member of advice committee in TRT; the director of Turkish Music in the 5th Five-Year Development Plan Preparatory Committee.
