Ayhan Baran was born in Ankara in 1929. He studied opera with Frieda Böhm, and graduated from the Opera Department at the Ankara State Conservatory in 1951. He then started working at the Ankara State Opera. He also studied singing for two years with Apollo Grandforte. Baran gave his first concert in abroad in 1959 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, and with the Niedersachsische Symphony Orchestra in Hannover. During the time in 1967-1969, he performed as a guest artist at the Deutsche Poer im Rhein in Düsseldolf and the Duisburg Opera, and worked for some time as a director of the Ankara State Opera. Baran was a prize winner at the 1961 International Enescu Music Contest in Bucharest and at the 1963 International Vervier Singing Competition. He was also awarded a Gold medal at the Harriette Cohen International Music Competition in 1963. The CD: Verdi’s “Les Vepres Siciliennes”, which Baran performed with an orchestra, conducted by Maria Rossi in London, was recorded by the Sonic in Switzerland. His other recording, “Adnan Saygun’s Four Turkish Works” with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra won the 1985 French Academy Recording Award. In 1987, Baran was given the title of State Artist. In 2007, he recorded “Geçmişten Günümüze Ayhan Baran” (3 CDs). Currently, Baran continues to work at Istanbul State Opera.
