Erdem Helvacıoğlu was born in Bursa in 1975. He studied industrial engineering and electroacounstic music composition at MIAM (the Center for Advanced Studies in Music) of Istanbul Technical University. He then completed his master’s degree on sound engineering and electroacoustic music composition at his alma mater. He worked with composers such as Pieter Snapper, Ken Valitsky, Mark Wingate and Reuben De Lautour.
Helvacıoğlu has released several albums such as “A Walk Through the Bazaar” (Locustmusic, 2003), “Altered Realities” (New Albion, 2006), "Modern Times" (Muzikotek, 2006), Wounded Breath" (Aucourant, 2008) and "Spectra: Guitar in the 21st Century" (Quiet Design, 2009). He has collaborated with many artists including Mick Karn, Kevin Moore, John Wilson, Kazuya Ishigami, and Saadet Turkoz. Helvacıoğlu has contributed to the soundart compilation CD “ctrl-art-del” with his piece “Personal Crisis” together with other composers including Scanner, Kim Cascone and Merzbow. Helvacıoğlu has also composed music for theatre, film and multimedia productions, and produces for popular and rock music bands in Turkey. His compositions have been performed at numerous international electric music festivals and exhibitions such as Sonorities, CEAIT, Musica Viva, Third Practice, Nuit Bleue, Futura, Licenses, Primavera en La Havana in various countries including Canada, France, Italy, the US, Austria, Singapore and Turkey. He has received many international prizes including two consecutive third prizes in the 2002 and 2003 Luigi Russolo Electroacoustic Competition and an honorable mention in the 2004 Insulae Electronicae Electroacoustic Competition with his electroacoustic tape works. His sound installations have been included at galleries like Los Angeles Track 16, Indonesian Soemardja, Köln Museum für Angewandte Kunst and London Menier. Currently, Helvacıoğlu is continuing his doctoral degree at his alma mater.
