Hakan Ulus was born in Buxtehude, Germany in 1991, and spent his childhood in Mönchengladbach. He took piano lessons from Hans Michael Esser, and later from Katherine Beno. Ulus participated in many composition classes and studied with famous musicians such as Mehmet Nemutlu (Istanbul), David Graham (Bonn, LMR NRW), Annette Schlünz, Prof. Dieter Mack (Weikersheim), Dieter Schnebel, and Peter Ablinger (Salzburg). In 2009, Ulus began studying composition with composer Dr. Ernst Helmuth Flammer. Since 2010, Ulus has studied composition with Prof. Adriana Hölszky at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg. Ulus also studies Electronic Music with Achim Bornhöft and Prof. Tristan Murailin in the Studio for Electronic Music Mozarteum. Ulus also attended the "Next Generation" program at the Donaueschingen Festival in 2011.
Ulus’s works have been performed by renowned performers, such as the pianist Susanne Kessel (Internationales Beethovenfest Bonn 2009) and the Ensemble Recherche (Salzburg Biennale 2011), in many contemporary music festivals. His works have also been broadcasted by German (BR) and Austrian (ORF) radio stations. He was invited to the "Tag der Talente" in Berlin by the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic Germany (2010); and to the "Meetingpoint Music Messiaen; Contemporary Composers + Composing on the continent" in Görlitz. Ulus won a prize in the 25th Bundeswettbewerb Composition of the Jeunesse Musicale in Germany. In 2011, he received the second prize in the "Recherche" composition competition. Ulus is the founder and the artist director of the "JENMS" (Junges Ensemble für Neue Musik Salzburg).
