Hayri Dev was born in Gökçeyayla village in the district of Çameli in Denizli in 1933. He began playing saz in his childhood. When he was 17-18 years old, Dev became a master to play sipsi, a whistle made of pine, and a three stringed bağlama. Until French etymologist, Associate Prof. Jerome Cler found him in 1992, Dev played and sang in weddings, while he shepherded in mountains. His life was introduced in the French film “Ormanlar Arkası”. He was also invited to France three times to perform his concerts. As of today, Dev teaches at the Conservatory, which belongs to Denizli Municipality. In 2010, he was awarded as one of the seven Turkish Living Treasures by UNESCO and the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
