İlkin Deniz was born in Trabzon in 1961. He grew up in Istanbul. He started playing mandolin and accordion in his childhood. When he was a high school student, Deniz first became interested in playing bass upon hearing records of Jaco Pastorius, Scott LaFaro, Charlie Haden, Ray Brown, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker. He took bass classes from Cem Aksel and Tahsin Endersoy. Since then, he has played with different jazz groups and artists such as Emin Fındıkoğlu, Erol Pekcan, Önder Focan, İmer Demirer and Neşet-Mükhet Ruacan orchestra in Europe. In 1993, Deniz released the album “Jazzbank”, which was the first pop jazz album in Turkey.
In 1995, he moved from Istanbul to Palm Beach, Florida with his family. He played with David Liebman in the Hollywood Jazz Festival, and with Richie Cole in West Palm Beach. In addition to his musical activities, Deniz is a painter and has done art shows almost every weekend for the last 5 years. He has spent most summers in Istanbul recording and performing at jazz concerts. Since 1994, Deniz has worked with Telvin. With Group Telvin, he participated in the "Jazz Made in Turkey" in Lincoln Center New York. Deniz also performed with Joe Lovano in the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. He has participated in many Jazz festivals in Germany, Holland and Turkey.
