Işın Çakmakcıoğlu was born in Germany to Turkish parents. He has had an enviable international career since he completed a Bachelor of Music Degree. He studied with S. Akcil at the Istanbul University Conservatorium and was awarded a State Scholarship which led to studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna with G. Pichler, leader of the A. Berg Quartet. He completed a masters of music degree at the Royal Academy of Music, London with M. Hasson and members of the Amadeus Quartet. He performed in music courses with O. Kagan, V. Spivakov and V. Klimov.
Çakmakcıoğlu won second prize in the National Violin Competition in Turkey in 1989. He has performed solo and chamber music concerts in Turkey, Britain, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Israel, Malaysia, Brunei, New Zealand and Australia. He has been a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since migrating to Australia 1993.
His interest in contemporary music has led to many performances and recordings of work of our time, both, in Australia and overseas. In 2003, he received an Australia-Korea Foundation grant for a concert of contemporary Korean and Australian chamber music concert. One project with the Melbourne Composers League featured a chamber music concert of contemporary Turkish and Australian works, held in the Victorian State Parliament.
He was the violinist of Trio Melbourne for seven years and performed extensively, both in Australia and overseas. Their CD of 20th-Century Piano Trios on the Move label received many fine reviews.
Last year′s engagements included performances of numerous chamber works by Alfred Hill in Wellington, recorded by Radio NZ as well as a performance of Sibelius’ Piano Quintet as part of the MSO Chamber Players series. This year’s engagements will include Ozdil’s String Quartet as part of MSO′s Metropolis Series, recitals in Malaysia and Brunei and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as a soloist with the Istanbul Chamber Orchestra.
