Meriç Dönük was born in Mersin in 1985. She started her musical education at the Children’s Chorus of Mersin State Opera and Ballet. In 1996, she entered the Department of Harp at Mersin University State Conservatory and studied harp with İndira Salmanlı and Hakan Gözükara. While a student at the Conservatory, she attended the young artist’s concerto competition, and was featured as a concerto soloist with the Mersin University Orchestra. After graduating from the secondary division of the Conservatory in 2003, she entered the Department of Music and Stage Arts of Yıldız Technical University and studied with Şirin Pancaroğlu. Dönük made her debut with solo and chamber music recitals during the 2003-2004 seasons with performances at Cemal Resit Rey Concert Hall, Tarik Zafer Tunali Cultural Center and Muvaffak Benderli Hall in Istanbul.
Dönük has participated in many master classes, festivals and contests in Turkey and abroad, including Germany, England, Spain, Brazil and Slovenia. In 2004, she attended the “Musicians of the New Millennium”, which was hosted by the International Harp Contest, Jeunnesses Musicales in Skopje, Macedonia, and won second place. In the same year, she won the “European Union Encouragement Prize”, which was given by the European Foundation for Culture to young musicians. In 2005, she was chosen as one of the young talented harpists to take part in the 9th World Harp Congress “Focus on Youth” concerts in Dublin. Dönük represented Turkey in the II. Rio de Janeiro Harp Festival, and introduced Traditional Turkish Folk songs (Turku), which were arranged for the harp. In 2007, she won second place in different categories of the International Harp Contest in Celenje, Slovenia. In 2008, she was invited to the 10th World Harp Congress, which was held in Amsterdam, and played in the premiere of Mehmet Ali Uzunselvi’s “Çengir /Chengir”. Currently, Dönük performs in jazz ensembles in Istanbul, and tries to create jazz repertoire, based on both fundamental jazz standards and classical music.
