Münif Akalın was born in Istanbul in 1969. He started playing cello with Tayfur Çağlayansu in 1980. He continued playing cello with Suzan Altıner in 1986. In 1991, he graduated from the State Conservatory of Istanbul University. Between 1990 and 1991, he worked with Helmut Rocholl at a cello class, which was held in Çanakkale and Hannover. In 1993-1994, Akalın gave classes with Piero Farulli, who is a famous violist and a member of the Quartetto Italiano, and Andrea Nannoni, who is a cellist and an assistant of Pieto Farulli, in the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and Scola Musica di Fiesole. Between 1992 and 1999, Akalın played in the Akbank Chamber Orchestra. In 1992-1997, he taught cello at the State Conservatory of Istanbul University.
In 2003, Akalın started working as a director and cellist in the Mersin University Academic Chamber Orchestra. He has performed with many chamber orchestras such as the Istanbul Chamber Orchestra, which was directed by Rengim Gökmen (2004), the Izmir State Symphony Orchestra, the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra, the Bursa Region State Symphony Orchestra, Mersin University Academy Chamber Orchestra and Anadolu University Symphony Orchestra. In 2006, Akalın founded the Isis Quartet within the State Conservatory of Mersin University.
Currently, Akalın teaches cello and chamber orchestra at the State Conservatory of Mersin University. In addition, he works as a group director in the Chamber Orchestra of Milli Reasürans, the Chamber Orchestra of Istanbul University and the Chamber Orchestra of Mersin University.
