Murat Üstün was born in Izmir in 1959. He began studying music at the age of ten. He entered the State Conservatory in Izmir, and studied music, especially piano and horn, for nine years. In 1979, he went to Germany and studied with Prof. Erich Penzel at the Academy of Music in Cologne. Since 1990, Üstün has been teaching French horn and piano at the music school of Dornbirn. He has performed as a hornist, conductor, arranger and composer in many concerts and festivals with many orchestras and ensembles such as the Hagenbeck Circus Orchestra, Sonus Brass Ensemble, Dornbirn, Ensemble Triage, Flötenquintett Ensemble der Wiener Symphoniker, Kammerorchester Izmir, Philharmonie Köln, and Philharmonie Luxemburg. Since 2010, Üstün has served as a conductor in the City Orchestra of Feldkirch.
